Ask HN: Offered partnership in a startup, what do I need to look out for?
We recently started working on a new, very interesting project, and today I've been offered to start a partnership with him in a new company based on this product. His reasoning was to give me a greater incentive to work 110% and not to leave him tomorrow towards other pastures.
We haven't decided anything yet, but the offer was 25% in the company, plus a minimum salary since I can't (and won't) work for free while we're building the MVP.
The client is great, has always paid on time and been very professional since I've started working for them, and has always respected and given me the freedom of picking the best tech for the problem. My role would be lead engineer/CTO. Their role would business guy/CEO.
Seems to good to be true, but I'm definitely leaning towards doing it. Is this arrangement common, and what do I need to look out for?
Thanks.
