I encourage you to read the full source text (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3914586-Googles-Ideological-Echo-Chamber.html) as well as Motherboard's analysis (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/evzjww/here-are-the-citations-for-the-anti-diversity-manifesto-circulating-at-google) for yourself.
I find the author to be making several unsubstantiated/poorly-substantiated claims - but ultimately in two separate arguments. The first is that Google's whole-hog investment into aggressive group-think PC culture is wrong headed (this south park clip summarizes perfectly what is meant by group-think PC culture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3n7yP5g8RQ). The second is that a root cause of the gender-issues in tech is/may (here the author vacillates in terms of the veracity with which me makes this claim) be biological.
Dealing with the wide array of shitty things that tends to happen to women in tech will require a sustained and thoughtful process of constructive debate, experimentation, and patience. Google had an opportunity to do just that but instead chose to shut down the conversation and in-so-doing, enabled the dialogue to metastasize into a reasonable argument that Google doesn't give two shits about meaningful change and is interested only in maintaining the appearance of doing something so as to hold at bay PR challenges that might impact their bottom line.
Curious as to HN's thoughts on this. This is a complicated issue and even if Google refuses to talk about it - nothing is going to get better unless we the community are willing to.
