Ask HN: Stories of software projects helping non-S/W companies' bottom line?
We all have stories of failed software projects at non-software companies, often due to those companies thinking software is easier to build than it actually is, then either not staffing the team properly, not giving them enough time, requesting half-baked ideas, or just generally mismanaging the project.
Does anyone have any success stories of software projects at non-software companies?
Were you hired to write software at a company where the primary product is not software, then did your work measurably improve the financial well-being of the company?
How did you do it? Is the project still being used in production? What did you learn along the way? How did the rest of the company react to your work?
