I know it's extremely unlikely, I do wish Apple would move its phones and tablets to use USB-C too.

I can't understand why they won't do it.

I think 2 reasons:

1. They already have a lot of accessories for lightning and they would kinda lose that sweet 30 % MFi for 3rd party lightning accessories

2. A lot of people who don't know why USB C is great will probably bitch about how Apple is changing the port on the iPhone _again_, like they did when they switched from 30 pin to lightning. Could be a PR nightmare

No PR nightmare is bigger than loss of headphone jack - I imagine lot of people had great and expensive headphones that are no longer usable directly. Apple seems to survived that.

If memory serves, Apple had a licensing deal with Intel over the lightning port on the iPhones. I can't recall the expiration of the deal, but that's why the laptops already have USB-C and the phones/tablets don't.
