Fsv – 3D File System Visualizer

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. It's the first thing I looked for too!
I'd suggest the unfamiliar check out the video.
- Zooming in the corners of a file to see detailed information (size and disk space down to the individual bytes, hexadecimal representation of contents, some other stuff I don't remember).
- Instant visualization of almost any document (images, videos, audio, pdf (with pages side by side!), html, txt, doc, etc) straight from the file manager, with no additional clicks.
- Transparently navigating inside compressed archives (after a warning tunnel saying that this operation could be expensive).
- The two-selections mechanic for file operations, which I have never seen before or after, is incredibly intuitive after three tries and works well across a variety of operations.
- All configuration is laid on a single panel, also zoomable, with detailed information laid as a (initially) minuscule text right beside each option.
- It's just plain impressive, and a great conversation starter.
Unfortunately I had to stop using it because it was getting harder and harder to satisfy the numerous dependencies to keep media visualization working. This is even more problematic in Windows, which is a shame.
The touchscreen touches back.
I'd love to see this updated. Maybe even take advantage of VR.
Edit:
Somewhat related to that, one of my favorite books as a kid was Tom Clancy's Net Force. And in it there was a novel VR-based way people navigated the internet. Also, Full Disclosure by Michael Chritchton (spelling?) has a VR based interface.
Here's the scene from the movie adaptation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkyV7d5t8o

I used to like XCruiser.
