The Remains of the Day seems thematically very similar to Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, yet I haven't from my brief googling seen any comparisons. Has anyone read both and can offer a comparison? I think I would like to read this.
I have read 'The Death of Ivan Illyich', from what I remember the focus there is ignoring of his family for work. Which in his terminal days, he regrets a lot. This one, seems (based on Amazon reviews) to be regretting, spending life for a wrong cause/person. So kind of similar, but also subtle difference.
