Other projects should learn from Chrome: remove all user interaction from your automatic update process and you can release new versions as often as you want.
I don't think that you can blame Chrome's updates for breaking that extension. It's much more likely that the extension is broken.

It looks like it was updated yesterday with a bug fix.
I have been exclusively using dev channel for 6 months, never had a problem and it updates every week.
I've been running the bleeding edge versions since the first public releases, pretty much, and last saw the sad face in 2.x series, I think.
It's such a great example of how to execute, reminds me of the IE team in the early days when they still cared.
I've converted most of the office to using it, even die-hard Firefox and IE (yes, IE) users. My nagging gets them to try it, the performance keeps them :)
I hope they never give up or lose inertia like IE did.
