This sounds like a rehash of the 20th century phrase "why buy a cow when the milk is free". Pretty sure I first came across it in a Heinlein story, but can't remember which.

Quick search finds http://digitalcommons.acu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=10... from 1992 using it, as "An engagement is not a time for sexual experimentation. An old saying “why buy a cow, when the milk is free” is true."

Cringe/clickbait title and paywall.
