Ask HN: What is the best way to backup an external HDD to the cloud?

I had to come up with a solution to back up my Lightroom catalogs and raw archive hard drives. I dump an image of each and upload it to s3 and gdrive. Pretty manual, but I do it once per year or so.

I choose to dump an image against i.e tar.bz because I can rely on the fs checksum in case of data degradation.

Good idea. This will work for me because I'm just backing up what are essentially archives. Thanks!

Might help your responses if you'd mention how much data we're talking about ;)

Without knowing that, I'd say BackBlaze. Just be sure to connect them once a month.

Alternatively, get a Synology with enough disk space, then put it at a friend's house.
