It lacks in user base (which might not matter for internal use) and performance and reliability. It can be slow and it goes down occasionally. It hasn’t been enough of a problem for my company to move back to GitHub.
These observations only apply to the hosted GitLab.com, as I don’t self host I don’t know the differences there. I have both public and private personal projects as well as private company projects on it.
With Gitlab you set up a runner instance with their CLI and you're good to go.
Perhaps that's unclear, but as of 9.5.x you can assign an issue to multiple users, but you can only assign a merge-request to one user.
Being able to assign a merge-request to multiple users would be very useful..
It's not quite as polished as github yet but with their recent funding round I would expect gitlab to pick up steam and close the gap even further. For day to day use I'd say they are now at 95% feature parity or even better, and in some cases it is actually ahead.
I still switch between Hub and Lab, but seeing GitLab's growth makes me smile.
I personally think GitLab is hungrier, and have some really great features, but I haven't had any contact with their support to know if something goes wrong that one can get unstuck quickly
