Ask HN: What do you do when an app with cloud sync shuts down without notice?

Efforts to contact the developer appear to have fallen on deaf ears, and I've all but given up hope that any data would be recovered. For me, that just means journal entries and location data for the past couple of years is now stranded in the app unless I can find a way to extract that data. For others, far more is lost.
With so many apps trying to implement syncing to the cloud, what recourse is there for users if the developer/company decides to just shut down business without warning? Is the lesson to be learned from this that no cloud service, even paid ones, are trustworthy? What does this say about the ever increasing movement to the cloud & subscription models?
