Can you be more specific technically? (language used, learning curve for app engine, time spent on dev).

This is 'quite straightforward' to do this in MVC PHP, I'd like to do it on app engine for fun & learning.

Hacker News seemed to be the place to post a little joy as I marvelled that I'd done a good enough job with my code so that I have nearly zero cost and it pays my rent in SF. seems like a "hack" to me.

If you are going to post something like that to HN, how about more details? How you did it. What the application is. How you took advantage of GAE. What your metrics were. Something to give it some meat.

7.5 requests? Does it mean that out of supposedly 8 requests only 7 were successful and 1 was half way through then caused an error?

"14 requests every two seconds" just doesn't have the same punch, I'm guessing.

No before or after. Site was built and has grown from nothing to generating almost a million page views a month, and its not just a simple php blog. It's a web app with voting and random selection and stuff. And i'm paying nothing for hosting. i just had a moment of glee, thats all :-)

A million per month is actually about 23 pageviews per minute on average; a constant 7.5 per second would amount to 7.5 x 60 x 60 x 24 x 30 = 19,440,000 monthly views.

So you're saying you have a current peak of about 20 times your average? Would love to know why this is / how you did it.

What were you paying before, and what are you paying now?

Presumably 0 before and 10c per day now...

also, i'm rather proud of learning how to scale something like this. incredibly educational and satisfying.

Could you at least give us some advice on how to scale properly? Or did you do just follow the advice that was written in the App engine documentation?

Also, are you using webapp?

Would you be able to post on how you put your php application on GAE?
