Ask HN: What is your net worth?

37 pointstoocool57 comments

Hello HN

The more I think about it, the more I am worried about the future and ability to provide for my family, and the most reasonable answer seems to have a good safety net, and I am curious as to how I compare to fellow technologists.

What is your age, state (or country) and net worth, measured as the value of your assets if liquidated today - liabilities? I'll start:

Age: 32

State: CA

NW: 550k USD (I don't own a house, so that's all liquid in investment funds)

Thanks!

Why would this post be flagged? I'm humbly looking for an explanation.

The primary value of this site is intellectual curiosity. That's just one kind of curiosity; there are many others. The kind involved in this post is one step removed from comparing body measurements (edit: as https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15107213 already pointed out). That's crushingly off topic.

Age: 24, Location: Atlanta, NW: ~$2k

Welcome to the life of a grad student..

I was right there at 24 :)

Providing for your family is not measured in NW but in time and dedication. Source: I am a 50 yo father of 4 who have taught me that.

Isn't it like comparing your... Oh, well, nevermind.

Congratulations! I'm curious, how have you saved 550k at age 32?

Is it a matter a linearly saving ~68k USD a year every working year (I'm assuming a high-paying engineer job in the Valley), or have you had equity in a successful venture?

It's really not that much if you look at the other responses. Anyway, the answer is linearly saving ~50% of income, I hope I'll get some sort of liquidity event from some stock options I have, but I'm not banking on it.

Age: 20 Location: central Kansas Approximate net worth: $2k

Probably need to work on upping that a bit.

You're not going to get anything but outliers here.

Age:21, Net worth: not of any sort Country:India I am in my final year of my bachelor's. I will be a marine engineer. You guys seem to be doing good. Will you guys offer me advice about a good tech start up and what I should know before hand. After I earn some saving, I want to try my hand on commercial farming. Also important financial decisions I should consider at my age.

Prediction: The (age-adjusted) distribution of responses will follow a bathtub curve, but not because that's the population distribution.

Wow... You're doing really well at 32 years and 550k. Any tips or insights into how you got there so quickly?

If he bought a house 6 years ago he could have gained 400k of that in house alone.

No house, all liquid.

Kind of worried since I had to switch careers and now I have a late start to my technology career

Started working as a software dev out of high school. Struggling to save (more) money in such an expensive place.

Cost of Living is very much "ouch". Mind sharing what you pay for rent and in what area?

I lived in Belltown for about a year and was paying $2,335. I now rent a house in Medina (just across SR 520) with some friends and rent is only $585.

Wow! 32, with a network of half a million!

You are significantly richer than most of the people I know.

Very nice! Did you get there through normal income and aggressive savings, or had some liquidity event from startups?

Normal income -> savings, timely purchase of primary residence during recession, some fortunate startup equity. About a third each.

Impressive! Bitcoin, business or inheritance if I might ask? :)

Can crypto millionaires cash out yet?

Sure, crypto has has always had both ways, not like you're locked in or anything.

There might be hurdles around the speed of delivery (measured in days or weeks) and I've seen some people cashing out splitting into multiple payments for various reasons, but overall just a little harder and slower than regular transactions. And probably some extra fees, but if you are a millionaire from crypto that is a drop in the bucket.

Of course

Crypto ;) and some local stock market investments.

How did you become so wealthy? Do you run a company or had a lucky break or your family is rich? Just curious.

Answered in the previous comment. Humble beginnings, trading since I was 16.

That is not late, and it sounds like you're just boasting to be honest. You are WAY ahead of the curve for most people on this planet.

To be honest if you're making minimum wage in the USA, you are also way ahead of the curve for most people on the planet.

But yeah, people in this thread are doing a bit better than most people in America!

I heard the other day that 2/3 to 3/4 of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and could not afford an unplanned $500 expense.

If I started at 21-22 I'd be able to save an extra $1-2M by retirement, so yes, it is late when you're optimizing for financial independence.

OP wasn't asking about financial independence. Your post is unnecessarily dramatic for the sake of talking about how well off you are. I mean you JUST created an account to post about it.

Why stop at 21? Those who started at 18 had 3 extra years to make money?

How much are you making now?
