The 2G GSM modem seems like a non-starter for those in the U.S. since AT&T (and apparently T-Mobile too, at least locally) has disabled such technology on their towers. I'm a bit surprised a 3G modem wasn't made standard, with an option to upgrade to LTE (even if it were to cost a tad more).
