You should not operate a linux server without great familiarity. (well, at least not one commercial success/survival depends on)

Everyone has to start somewhere...

But preferably not in production.

In my experience, most how-tos that work for Ubuntu work for Debian, often almost without changes.

It's like that in aerospace.

Which part of the tech world do you live in where there is no concept of specialisation?

Do you expect graphic designers also write SQL Stored Procedures, or DBA's to crank out PSD's?

Does your business/product manager moonlight as the head of security?
