Would you please not post unsubstantive rants to HN? Even if your underlying point is right, it's still polluting.
Internet being turned into a shitty place by bad developers and advertisers is why AMP exists in the first place.
You just said "Jimmy pissed in the pool, so who cares if Timmy shits in it?"
I have hard time sympathizing with people who made the web a horrible blinking ad and malware laden experience for everyone. Especially when they're complaining about something that brings actually content and performance forward again.
That's the trojan horse though. Google pushes the performance aspects of AMP, when I suspect that's not the killer feature for them. See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14529605
Google has a part in that too though. I have a hard time sympathizing with people who made the web into a panopticon, and as such I'm not inclined to hand them more power.
It's more of "Jimmy pissed in the public pool, so now everybody goes to the private pool"
AMP exists because it benefits Google to know what content users read and what they click-through to. It has nothing to do with making a better internet.
On mobile I click only on AMP because it is fast.
As someone who occasionally has slow internet and doesn't want to wait 5+ minutes for CNN or such to load, it's pretty awesome.
In terms of "a worse place", well, as a user, I disagree. I wish it wasn't necessary but it clearly is.
Because websites loading 10mb of useless Javascript is "good" internet?
How else can I ask you to enable push notifications the first time I see you, then ask if you want to sign up for my newsletter when your mouse moves up off the page?
AMP is trying to do to the web what the web did to the Internet.
I feel that way about the web ecosystem in general. I want Google Kingmaker Curation about as much as I want web "apps" with MB of JavaScript because some cargo culting webdev loves him some frameworks.
I'm not sure I would go that far but I've given up on Google personally, though. Yahoo search is ok. Firefox's mobile UI isn't as good but I'm sticking with it. Email and Photos is pretty hard to get away from. Hopefully I'll be fully out some day in the near future.
