In DE it's something like 4+ months for each parent and one parent can gift their time to the other. It does not depend on the insurance of the company or some silliness like this. However, if you are self employeed you do not get this. Also on top parents get some 100+ eu a month per child regardless of employement, for X number of years.

Generally europe has much better maternity/paternity leave than the US. In the UK you get 39 paid weeks of maternity leave. The first 6 are at 90% of your salary, the rest is much lower (depending on your salary) but you still get paid each week.
