Ask HN: What is a normal level of direction for entry-level software engineer?

At your company are new engineers included in current or future projects from day one (projects that have a clear focus and lifecycle)?

Or, are new engineers left to their own devices, akin to an intern, and forced to hustle and scrounge up work or create their own projects after getting some level of higher-up approval?
