I prefer shell aliases for that because you can make them much shorter like "gb" for "git branch".

I didn't realize you could modify git command names. Initially it sounds like a good idea but I'm not sure I want to break my muscle memory. Saving a few keystrokes isn't worth the frustration and mistyping when I need to work from someone else's computer. This xkcd comes to mind: https://xkcd.com/1806/

Actually, you can't. From the git-config manpage:
aliases that hide existing Git commands are ignored
My alias are one or two letter shortcuts for the verbose command. When I'm using git without my config and my muscle memory types one of my aliases, it's obvious what the verbose command I need to type is.
