From the starting position that hers is one of many stories like this, no, it's not particularly weird that this one came to light after the anti-Uber campaign. It happened to line up well with the tech and media industries recently hating Uber because of politics, and so it played to people's biases. And the particular narrative that Uber is the one bad company in a good industry definitely played to people's biases. There are lots of stories like this (which is part of why I think this story is particularly believable: it's not an extraordinary claim by any stretch, and therefore does not require extraordinary evidence), but you've heard of very few of them.
Be skeptical of the implicit claim that Uber is awful in ways that the rest of the industry isn't.
