Sadly this is feeling more and more like the new 'normal'. Carry a copy of your essential data, heavily encrypted, in an 'attachable' hard drive. Leave the expensive display and keyboard (aka laptop) at home.

Now I'm wondering if I can patch Asterix so that if I text it a particular challenge and response will it take the number that is texting it and route my phone number to it.

Or don't carry anything, and take an old thinkpad with basically a throwaway thin client OS on it set up to allow you access to a vnc-over-ssh session elsewhere.

What would be a good tutorial for those that aren't familiar with this?

I picked up a $160 Chomebook Thinkpad and it works great for this purpose.

Ed25519 keys are short... someone with a good memory should be able to memorize their private key (it's just 32 bytes).

No patching needed. You can do that with a dialplan. (But you will need a recent Asterisk if you plan on doing incoming sms via sip.) That challenge/response processing might need an external application to validate though.

Why not just use Google Drive to back up your "essential" data, after encrypting it?

All of these models people here are coming up with eventually secure against your adversary once they obtain your encrypted data, so why not just start there?

Feels like people are just playing into some kind of fantasy, rather than trying to come up with workable and practical security measures...

you can do that with asterisk, if you forward it to some voice number, they can sniff you, so why not use the encrypted voip for voice, sure u need internet on you burner but you probably already have that.
