It's a reasonable heuristic for when you just don't have the time or energy, but if you are giving a 45min keynote speech on the topic I think you are expected to make the effort to judge an idea on its merits.
The "cultists" he is arguing against are leaders of industry and science. The discourse bar should be extremely high. Way above ad hominem disses.
