So British I can't help but think of the Airline Pilots skit from "How to Irritate People" - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Irritate_People

Were the effects from volcanic eruptions not known at this time?

As the page says, they did not detect the cloud, because it was not clearly visible and onboard instruments dedicated to detecting ashes did not work with that particular dry type of ash.
