Its not too bad, XMPP is very easy with a good client like Conversations. That being said it is not for normies, over the course of a year Signal will be used and appreciated by normies, normies using Conversations meanwhile will go perma offline after a few weeks from what I've seen.

Conversations is essentially Signal but for XMPP, the problem is it doesn't blend in normal SMS and additional value adds to sweeten the pot for normies and keep them using it.
