I see so many comments which boil down to "either buy a subscription or be willing to have ads shown". But here's the reality. Even if you pay for a subscription, you still see ads. And worse, you still have code from 3rd parties, whom you didn't invite, running on your computer.

I bet if you took a survey of the HN community, the majority would say they have no problem with 1st-party ads (how about simple inline images) of a quality commensurate with the quality of the publication.
