I'd say it's likely that the most significant discovery of the past 8 years hasn't gone too far past the initial discovery phases.

CRISPR is a good example of a discovery that has just come into the public consciousness in recent years, but history for that dates back 20 years!

LIGO & Higgs boson too, decades upon decades of research have gone into these.

CRISPR most likely followed up by the Higgs Boson.
