Why would that make any difference?

It wouldn't if you are still using the keyboard on the laptop.

Makes me wonder how common it is for someone to use a second monitor off the laptop but still use the laptop's keyboard and trackpad.

Maybe I didn't understand his remark. Obviously if you don't use the touchbar it doesn't work. And if you don't use the trackpad it doesn't work, etc.
