Ask HN: Multi-video compression and Mars
One of the things that came up was the need of synchronizing the most viewed websites and that at least in the initial stages we would be bandwidth-constrained in doing so.
YouTube for example is probably a site that would make sense to sync between the planets (also maybe as a video letter platform, because of the 20mins delay). It would also probably make sense to do bulk syncs, assuming we would not have enough bandwidth to constantly stream updates (or would prefer to allocate it elsewhere).
In that scenario it's easy to see that since we would be sending more than one video at once, some kind of multivideo compression would be nice.
Has anybody already built a tool to do that? Is there some known advantage in viewing the problem from this prospective, compared to say just re-encoding multiple videos as a single long one, or just applying compression to the encoded data (aka windows' compress folder)?
As you can see I'm not an expert in video compression and google doesn't turn up much on the subject (edit: on the subject of multivideo compression).
