Ask HN: What makes a good startup CEO?

Mike Maples said, "when I see an extraordinary technologist paired up with a mediocre CEO. That situation just kills me," in response to, "What advice do VCs want to give founders during pitches but refrain from?"[0]

When a company is young, I often see the technologists hard at work and the 'business people' sitting around. Seemingly, there is little for a non-tech staff to do... In particular, the CEO, since he's not doing the tech, what metrics are used to evaluate? What makes a good one? What makes a mediocre one?
