They live longer because you need money to live in Manhattan, and socioeconomic status is correlated with life expectancy!
That's probably part of it. Another factor might be that you can't retire in Manhattan if you're poor.
Maybe because they have fun doing all kind of things that keep them going. I remember a friend of mine whose roommate was 60. She told me that 60 in NYC is like 40 somewhere else.
