Why is this on Hacker News? Just seems to be an ad.

If they had written a blog or an article explaining the resons behind this, it would be different. But this adds no value to HN. Would this have been acceptable if it had been a link to a site other than dropbox?

I recently downloaded MS Office 10 Beta and there's an option to save files directly to Skydrive which has 25GB free.

I started having second thoughts about using Dropbox after this, the only advantage in using Dropbox (for me) is the iphone app. Although I haven't used either Skydrive or Dropbox to share files, which may be where Dropbox comes into its own.

Even if this doesn't generate a lot of sales by itself, it will get the product out there and exposed to more people so it's a good move that way.

Defiantly a lot of people out their which would find the product really useful that wouldn't have heard of it.

finally, I was about to drop dropbox because I am running out of space. I absolutely love the service, but their prices are just 2-3 times above the competition. I would buy the 100 GB in a heartbeat if it would be 50-70 USD a year.

I agree, their prices are a bit steep. Especially when you consider you'll probably not even use all the storage; it only starts to become 'worth it' if you're was using the full 50/100GB. If they charged per GB @ say, $0.25/GB, I'd use it a hell of a lot more.

I'm using a 20GB account that costs $6.99/mo. - It's perfect for me, but I don't think it's available anymore. I believe it was just a paid tier they put in to test if people would use it.

I suppose the problem is that paying users are subsidising free users. I know our company has about four paid accounts but we tell all our clients to get free accounts so that we can easily share files.

It means that there must be a 10:1 ish ratio of free to paid accounts which probably prevents them from dropping the price.

Arguably though, the service would be less valuable if everyone had to have a paid account before you could share files with them.

I use it for my business too. We have 4 different accounts and I am the only one connecting all accounts. If dropbox would offer an option to get 50 GB and create 10 accounts who can access different folders I would gladly pay 100-150 USD a year.

Agreed. It's a good service, but I just can't justify the cost. I'd pay $25 for a 10GB service, but I don't need the amount of space they're providing.

I started paying about one month ago (50Gb account) and I must say it really changed the way I use Dropbox. I'm at 70% fill now and a few weeks ago I never imagined I'd get above 10Gb. Parkinson's corollary law at work I guess: "Data expands to fill the space available for storage." ... Just out of curiosity I would like to ask the DropBox people if Parkinson's law affects their service & if it does, do they see that as a threat or opportunity?

I would guess that 8GB is maximum bonus space, which adds up to 10GB when you count the two gigs you started with.

Max 8GB for free users and 10GB for pro users?

It would be interesting to know if the referrals they win this way have higher/lower likelihood of developing into paid accounts.
