It's not often these days that you come across pages with such an exceedingly high content:markup ratio, and amazing how fast and readable they are compared to the typical pages of the "Modern Web".

Many older CS academics have personal web pages that are in that style.

Even many new academics follow that minimalist style. Academia frowns upon style over substance.

It's more that they don't have time to waste styling their site. A lot of new ones I've been taught by just used Bootstrap.

I like the way that this page http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/DataSources/WWW/Servers.html has to specifically disclaim that its list of WWW servers is exhaustive.

Yeah it's not always been there, Mark Boulton helped CERN restore it to it's original URL a few years ago, http://markboulton.co.uk/journal/firstwebsite

It predates any real standards for HTML.
