Barbacid: Science in Spain is dying (2016)
Extracts from a recent interview in the spanish newspaper "El Mundo". Comments within parentheses are mine.
"Recent years (since 2010) have been a disaster for research and evidently, by correlation, a disaster for the country"
"To advance, Science needs a combination of experienced people and new blood... Currently the situation is critic, because young researchers are leaving the country... The laboratories are being emptied of young people".
"Unless the actual investment on science triple (from the actual 1,25% GDP), Spain can forget about having any relevant (scientific) role in the first world"
