If the autopilot couldn't safely handle going 55-60mph, it should have slowed down to speeds that it could handle. If it couldn't safely handle those conditions, it should have safely slowed to a stop. Failing ungracefully is completely autopilot's (and Tesla's) fault.

55-60 may be too fast for some of the curves in this area. There are curves with an advisory speed of 45-mph. From the description of road and the area, I would guess it is MT-2 between Cardwell and Three Forks (I live in this area).

Also, the car told the driver to take back control of the vehicle, which the driver ignored.

People with no respect for the danger of driving are going to get hurt, with or without driver assist technology.

Then it should gradually and slowly come to a stop.

With hazard flashers going etc.

Stopping in 'a winding canyon with no shoulder' seems like a colossally bad idea. Mind you, trusting the badly named autopilot in this situation seems like an even worse idea. Especially if you consider the recent death that EVER Tesla drive must know about at this point. To then overconfidently trust the AP in an already dangerous environment for a human drive seems crazy.

Right, as you say, the only worse thing than coming to a stop is saying "Screw it, might as well give it a try and keep going!".
