Ask HN: Is there any point hiring a freelance SEO link-builder? Is it too risky?

I am currently looking into hiring an Freelance SEO link builder to build backlinks to my website as I do not have the time to do the grunt work.

Is this risky? Given that there are so many spammy ways to build links? Where would I find a good freelancer and how do I vet them?
