For those who are unfamiliar with the author of this article: Roger Schank is one of the early pioneers of AI research:

don't mean for this to come across as snarky but what has he done lately? is his best work from the 1980's?

That may be the problem. He sounds bitter.

It does, unfortunately, have a bit of an "Old man yells at cloud" tone to it. And I don't see any solid evidence for his arguments beyond appeal-to-authority in that essay.

He may be a bit of a curmudgeon - his blog is called Education Outrage, after all: http://educationoutrage.blogspot.com/

But he's done and continues to do a lot of good work. He helped found the Learning Sciences (an offshoot of cognitive science, AI, psychology, etc.) in the late 80s and early 90s.
