I wonder if people declared they would rather quit than work on the backdoor project if that would be an undue burden on the company.

That's a scary possibility, but very far in the future. There will be appeals regardless of how the district-court judge rules.

Apparently they did, for there mere reason of guilt by association and simple to avoid subpoena. You can't answer what you don't know.
