Starting from systemd is a league beyond what I've done. But you might like this script:

    #!/bin/sh
    emacsclient -t $@ || (emacs --daemon && emacsclient -t $@)

You'll want something like

    (unless (server-running-p)
      (server-start))

in your init file.
