I think it was more inspired by Munroe's brushes with Simple English Wikipedia, but that's a fantastic one too.

Didn't Guy Steele's "growing a language" also start with the 1000 most common words?

IIRC he started with one-syllable words, but same idea.

If I am right, I think he did but just with words with just one sound.
