These seem unusual because of the assumption that these were exclusively nomad lands. Take that away and agriculture/irrigation/livestock of some kind seems a lot more likely and a lot less mysterious. There is no information about contemporary techniques in the area either.
While I'm curious about these, there are some clear red flags of cultural superimposition in the original research.
