I still struggle to understand what they actually do. Did they have a product before the acquisition? Or patents?

The publications page is a bit more telling, but still, nothing concrete: http://deepmind.com/publications.html

First time I heard about it, they were explicit in saying it was an acqui-hire. In terms of what they've accomplished (at least publicly), DeepMind is less of a company and more a consortium of preeminent collection of AI experts.

Anyone know if this is Google Deep Mind or Alphabet - DeepMind? It occurs to me that the top-level holding company structure might also lead to a better / more autonomous environment for acquired companies that were not part of Google.

This submission gives the impression that a new acquisition is being announced, but Google bought DeepMind in January 2014.
