I have a less than 2 year old flagship phone (Moto X) with no L release yet, so this doesn't surprise me.

Both the 1st and 2nd gen MotoX are on 5.1.

not on Verizon :-(

Nor Sprint as far as I can tell. That covers about 190 million subscribers in the US.

And how do I update? I went to System Update and it says "Your device's software is up to date."

According to Sprint's website[1] 4.4.4 is the latest version.
