I'd argue that the maker movement is the next incarnation of "wild ideas and weirdos". It has a higher cost of entry than the internet does (you actually have to know a few things in order to build stuff).
Also: sharing stuff with people who would like to learn is still a cool thing to do. Perhaps you should mentor some people and then collaborate on your own weird ideas?
